Microsoft Merges Copilot Apps and Cuts Several Features

Microsoft is consolidating its AI ecosystem by merging the consumer version of its Copilot application with the enterprise-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot. This integration aims to deliver a more unified and consistent user experience across both personal and professional environments. However, the unification comes at the cost of several existing functionalities, as the tech giant streamlines the platform's codebase and feature set.

As part of this transition, Microsoft will permanently shut down several prominent features on August 18. The retirements include Group Chat, Podcasts, Deep Research, and Copilot Labs. Crucially, any user content generated within these specific tools will be deleted alongside the features themselves. Practitioners and everyday users who rely on these capabilities must manually export their data before the August 18 deadline to avoid permanent data loss.

The consolidation also marks the end of Copilot's animated, blob-like mascot, Mico. While the character will disappear from the primary Copilot interface during August, Microsoft is not retiring the visual asset entirely. Instead, Mico is being reassigned to Microsoft Learn Live, where the character will serve as an interactive tutor for educational content.

For developers and enterprise practitioners, this merger signals a shift in Microsoft's AI strategy away from fragmented, experimental consumer features toward a standardized, stable utility. While the loss of Copilot Labs and Deep Research reduces the sandbox environments available for testing cutting-edge capabilities, the unified application should simplify deployment, licensing, and training workflows for IT administrators managing corporate environments.
