Google DeepMind Partners With EVE Online Developer
Google DeepMind has partnered with Fenris Creations to use the EVE Online universe for training AI agents, marking a shift toward long-term planning and continual learning in complex virtual worlds.
Google DeepMind has established a major research partnership with Fenris Creations, the developer behind the EVE Universe, to prototype new gameplay experiences and advance AI capabilities. The collaboration leverages EVE Online, a persistent multiplayer space simulation launched in 2003, alongside EVE Vanguard and EVE Frontier. Additionally, DeepMind is developing SIMA 2, its Gemini-powered Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent. This generalist agent interacts with 3D environments using only visual inputs and keyboard-and-mouse controls, operating in games like No Man's Sky, Valheim, and Hydroneer without requiring direct API access.
This initiative builds on 15 years of gaming-focused AI research. In 2015, DeepMind published a Nature paper on its Deep Q-Network, which learned to play 49 Atari 2600 games, including Pong, Breakout, and Space Invaders. Subsequent milestones included AlphaGo defeating Lee Sae Dol in 2016, followed by AlphaGo Zero, AlphaZero, and MuZero. In 2019, AlphaStar achieved Grandmaster status in StarCraft II. These gaming foundations eventually led to AlphaFold, which solved the 50-year protein folding challenge and earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The EVE partnership offers a safe sandbox to study complex multi-agent dynamics, memory, and long-horizon planning over weeks or years. The collaboration has already produced the Aura Guidance system, which utilizes Gemini to assist rookie pilots using player-generated knowledge. DeepMind is also working with other studios, including Coffee Stain, Foulball Hangover, and Hello Games, to test agents across titles like Satisfactory, Goat Simulator 3, Space Engineers, Wobbly Life, Eco, ASKA, The Gunk, Steamworld Build, Road 96, and Teardown.
For game developers and AI practitioners, these advancements change how virtual environments are built and tested. Generalist agents like SIMA 2 can perform robust quality assurance testing during active development cycles, adapting automatically as code changes with every commit. Post-launch, these models can power non-player characters that adapt to unpredictable player behaviors in real time without needing manual re-scripting, paving the way for more dynamic and personalized gaming experiences.
