Japanese developer Nano, with sponsorship from Tripo, has launched Charakuru, a free source-available toolkit under a revenue-gated license. The software enables creators to transform a single 2D character drawing into a rigged VRM 1.0 3D model. To operate Charakuru, users need Node.js 22+, Blender 5.2 equipped with the VRM Add-on, an active Tripo account, and a Codex agent featuring browser control capability.

The system addresses common automated 3D generation issues, such as distorted faces, warped joints, and broken textures, by pairing automated execution with human oversight. Charakuru splits the conversion pipeline into five human review checkpoints covering images, candidates, proportions, motion, and final export. A Codex agent automates tasks by controlling Tripo inside a web browser and issuing commands to Blender through Model Context Protocol integration. While the project state and review interface run locally on the user's machine, background operations like image generation and agent execution rely on external services.

During the workflow, the system expands the initial drawing into multi-angle reference views, generates potential 3D candidates, and requests user validation. After approving a stage in the local dashboard, the user selects Continue, copies the system instruction, and feeds it to the Codex agent to trigger the next phase. Although the framework automates complex mesh editing and rigging, it remains in an early release phase. It currently lacks support for facial expressions or eye movements, relies on Japanese-only agent prompts, and contains known bugs. Despite these constraints, Charakuru offers practitioners a structured, agent-assisted pipeline that significantly reduces the manual Blender expertise usually required to repair defective 3D models.
